On Constructing Finite, Finitely Subadditive Outer Measures, and Submodularity

چکیده
Given a nonempty abstract set X, and a covering class C, and a finite, finitely subadditive outer measure ν, we construct an outer measure ν and investigate conditions for ν to be submodular. We then consider several other set functions associated with ν and obtain conditions for equality of these functions on the lattice generated by C. Lastly, we describe a construction of a finite, finitely subadditive outer measure given an arbitrary family of subsets, B, of X and a nonnegative, finite set function τ defined on B.

SOME REMARKS CONCERNING FINITELY SUBADDmVE OUTER MEASURES WITH APPUCATIONS
The present paper is intended as a first step toward the establishment of a general theory of finitely subadditive outer measures. First, a general method for constructing a finitely subadditive outer measure and an associated finitely additive measure on any space is presented. This is followed by a discussion ofthe theory ofinner measures, their construction, and the relationship oftheir prop...
متن کاملOn Finitely Subadditive Outer Measures and Modularity Properties
Let ν be a finite, finitely subadditive outer measure on P(X). Define ρ(E)= ν(X)− ν(E′) for E ⊂ X. The measurable sets Sν and Sρ and the set S = {E ⊂ X/ν(E) = ρ(E)} are investigated in general, and in the presence of regularity or modularity assumptions on ν . This is also done for ν0(E) = inf{ν(M)/E ⊂ M ∈ Sν}. General properties of ν are derived when ν is weakly submodular. Applications and nu...
متن کاملCharacterizations of Outer Measures Associated with Lattice Measures
Let ν be a finite countably subadditive outer measure defined on all subsets of a set X, take a collection C of subsets of X containing X and ∅, we derive an outer measure ρ using ν on sets in C. By applying this general framework on two special cases in which ν = μ′′, one where μ ∈ Mσ(L) and the other where μ ∈ Mσ(L1), L1 ⊆ L2 being lattices on a set X, we obtain new characterizations of the o...
متن کاملFinite-time Analysis for the Knowledge-Gradient Policy
We consider sequential decision problems in which we adaptively choose one of finitely many alternatives and observe a stochastic reward. We offer a new perspective of interpreting Bayesian ranking and selection problems as adaptive stochastic multi-set maximization problems and derive the first finite-time bound of the knowledge-gradient policy for adaptive submodular objective functions. In a...
متن کاملOn the Outer Automorphism Groups of Finitely Generated, Residually Finite Groups
Bumagin–Wise posed the question of whether every countable group can be realised as the outer automorphism group of a finitely generated, residually finite group. We give a partial answer to this problem for recursively presentable groups.
